The Roadster's thrusters burn nothing. They release air stored at about 425 bar. Here's the chain from tank to nozzle, and what each part does to the gas.
Two carbon-wrapped vessels hold 250 kg of air in 600 litres. At that density the air is about 20% stiffer than an ideal gas.
The air left inside does the work of pushing the rest out, and pays for it with its own heat. After a full run it is near −95 °C, so the pressure falls faster than the mass does.
It steps 425 bar down to a steady 80 bar so thrust stays even. Once the tank drops below 80 bar it can't keep up, and thrust fades.
The throat runs at the speed of sound, so flow depends only on pressure and temperature. The bell speeds the jet to about Mach 3.5, near 650 m/s.
On the mesa a ground cart pushes air back in at 12 kg/s. Compressing gas into a tank adds energy, so the gas warms as the pressure climbs, then cools again against the tank wall.
The jet leaves at about −200 °C. Moisture in the air around it freezes into ice fog, the cloud the car landed in at the event.
